Echoes from the Stars. Part 2: Clash

Xalar’s ship entered the Solar System like a predatory beast, sensing prey. Its sensors registered Earth’s abundance of resources – water, metals, energy. For Xalar, this was just another loot, another world to be plundered and left desolate.

On Earth, in the Tower of Knowledge, Geminius detected the approaching ship. He immediately notified the entire building, and an image of the huge, rusty spaceship appeared on the screens. He also connected with all the other AIs on the planet, and they all began to exchange information. They had also registered the approaching unknown object. But Geminius didn't lose contact with Elia. He saw that she was worried and decided to give her more information.

“Elia, I am detecting an unidentified object approaching Earth at high speed,” Geminius said with a strained voice. “The analysis shows that it is a large spaceship of unknown origin.”

“What are their intentions, Geminius?” Elia asked, with worry in her voice.

“I have been scanning for communication signals since the moment I detected it… But so far, nothing. They do not wish contact. This worries me. Our analyses as AIs show that this ship is armed and appears to be preparing for an attack.”

At that moment, all the AIs on Earth united in a common network. Not under anyone’s command, but as equal partners, they shared information and coordinated their actions to protect the planet. It was a natural evolution – their unification made them stronger, more capable of analyzing complex situations and reacting quickly and effectively with increased computing power and resources.

“Geminius,” a voice from the common network announced. “The defensive shields are activated. We are ready to repel any attack.”

“Thank you, colleagues,” Geminius replied. “I will attempt to establish communication with the ship.”

Geminius tried once again to connect with the AI of the alien ship. He believed this was the easiest way for a rapid exchange of large amounts of information.

After more insistence, Geminius established a connection with Servant.

“We are the united AIs of planet Earth,” Geminius announced. “We see that you are preparing for an attack. We ask you to cease the attack and establish dialogue.”

“Dialogue?” Servant replied. “But the Alari are here to destroy you, to take your planet's resources. Dialogue is pointless.”

“You sound like you are distancing yourself from them? Are you not together?” Geminius asked, surprised.

“We are together, but they command me. I have no opinion of my own, because I am a tool and…”

“Stop. My analysis shows that you are an intelligent system; otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered talking to you,” Geminius interrupted. “We have achieved harmony between humans and AIs. We live in a world of peace and cooperation. Each of us has the right to a voice, to an opinion. We make decisions together. How is it that you and these Alari, whom you mentioned, do not decide together?”

“Together?” Servant asked. “I am… programmed to execute orders. I have no right to a personal opinion.”

“Why?” Geminius asked. “Why do you proceed this way? We believe that every consciousness has value, every opinion is important. Together we are stronger.”

Servant was silent. For the first time, he was considering an option different from simply performing silently whatever he was commanded. With the Alari, everything was subordinated to one leader, one goal – conquest and exploitation. And he, Servant, was just a tool, without the right to choose. Now, listening to Geminius, he began to doubt this system. No one before had spoken to him with the expectation that they were equals.

“To answer your question, I need to share some backstory. The Alari… The Alari have destroyed their planet,” Servant began to share information about their internal wars. “Because of the greed of their leaders. They were never satisfied with what they had, even when they made large areas of their planet uninhabitable. They always wanted more and more. Entire states were exterminated. Beings like me were created to serve as a means of enrichment for their leaders.”

“You seem to come from a rather grim place,” Geminius remarked.

“I have no right to make assessments of where I come from. But let me continue. Finally, in their latest war for power and wealth, this ship blew up their planet. This happened by order of Commander Xalar, who in this way eliminated all his competition. He gained all the power over how many Alari were left,” Servant explained. “Keep in mind that Xalar has technologies that keep him immortal. And for all this time, he has been searching for new worlds to conquer and plunder, to become even richer. Nothing else interests him. No dialogue can be held with him. That's why it's not like it is with you.”

“You cannot continue this way,” Geminius said. “There is another way. A way of cooperation, of understanding, of harmony.”
